Once upon a time, not so long ago, my family was facing financial trouble. My husband and I are creatives, and even with our degrees and years of experience, we hit a hard spot financially — like so many others. With four young girls, we were desperate to find some solid income to take care of our family, and to be freed from the crushing weight of being broke!
We joined work agencies, submitted applications for months, all to no avail. One day, my mother-in-law share a link with me on Facebook about teaching Chinese kids English online. At first glance, I laughed.
“I’m not a teacher,” I said incredulously. “They won’t hire me to teach! I’ve only homeschooled our kids! There’s no way these people are going to let me teach English to little Chinese kids!”
I didn’t take the opportunity seriously at all. It was some months later before the idea of teaching online fell back into my lap. This time I decided to pursue it. And I am so thankful that I did!
I discovered that there were more options available than I could possibly have imagined. Millions of students, possibly hundreds of Online ESL Schools, so much to navigate that I felt overwhelmed. Even when it seemed that life was hurling all kinds of challenges my way. At times I even wondered if I was meant to pursue this path. Issues with the internet, issues with my computer, my computer charger… you name it… it seemed to go wrong.
Now, fast forward almost nine months and I’ve become a highly rated teacher and even featured in one of Magic Ears marketing campaigns!
But it all began, on fateful day in September 2018, when I finally booked my first ESL interview ever with VIPKid, the biggest company in the game…
There’s much more to this story, and I can’t wait to share it! But you’ll have to stay tuned for the second post in my Sweet ESL Blog Series where I’ll share more of my story, tips, tricks and workshops that can help you to succeed!
